Innocence Protector

"I brought you a present" Kyle said softly to Rain as he entered their chamber.

"Oh? What is it?" she replied brightly, till her eyes caught sight of the small girl standing next to him, "Who is this, what did you do?" the words flew out in rapid succession.

"You always said you wanted a child, a little girl." Kyle replied cautiously, "I found one in honor of our anniversary."

"No, tell me you didn't touch her." Rain said, a deadly cold entering her voice.

The temperature in the room began to plummet as Rain expressed her will.

"I haven't.." he started, "I planned to wait, for you." he practically stuttered.

"You will never touch her, Kyle, never." Rain said, a dark cloud literally began to form around her face as her expression became unreadable.

The little girl ran to the window staring out at the crows that had begun to flutter in. She moved near her and clenched her skirt tightly as if the fabric could prevent her from doing what she had long considered.

"I didn't mean any harm." he said, contritely.

He stayed silent for a while as she inwardly seethed, waiting for what he'd do next. She waited for him work his way to indignant. She didn't have to wait long.

"What kind of monster do you think I am?" he started to raise his voice then noticed the danger he was in. "I wouldn't have..." he finished softly, his eyes glowing with emotion.

Rain wanted to believe him. She wanted to trust what he had to say, but there was something lurking under the depth of his exterior that made her blood run cold. It wasn't anything tangible. Just a sense she'd been getting for a while. Kyle wasn't a cold blooded killer, he was a Vampiric gentleman most of the time. He had his sweet moments, his eyes were kind and he could suck you in with a smile, a tender, almost innocent smile. It was this very attribute that made him dangerous. He lured you into a false sense that you could trust and believe in him, then he did precisely whatever he wanted, believing that he could resort to manipulation to prevent fallout.

Kyle turned away, and she could see that once again he was all hurt feelings and sorry. She'd seen him pull this so many times, she could almost hear him begging her to tell him how to make things right and how to fix the damage he'd caused. All the while he was plotting, deep inside himself and she knew it. He'd play the sorry card and pretend that he'd change but he would always be exactly what he was. She still wasn't completely certain he did it on purpose, he had a naive air about him. That was the reason he was still alive. If she'd have known 7 years ago today what she knew now, she would never have saved him and brought him into her world. She'd watched his inability to accept responsibility, his changing of the past to suit his whims and the elaborate lies he told, for no good purpose. He was irresponsible and needy. This naive neediness had been an endearing attribute at first but the things he'd done since then made her question it. Especially how he pined over an ideal of perfection that could never be achieved, and she suspected that he saw in this child a potential. She was waiting for him to claim a connection, a deep seeded emotional connection that would forever "bind them" and she would have none of it. If she let him have his way, he would warp this poor child, change her and make her into what he wanted. Because, he was incapable of really emotionally attaching himself.

Rain felt something deep inside her stir, she'd never let him. It was time that he learned what he was and grew out of his childish fantasies. If he couldn't then he'd prove himself the danger she feared and she would take action. If only she'd controlled her heart sooner, if only.. She stopped herself, regrets were pointless now. She'd made him this way and if she didn't have the ability to control him she'd end him.
